Zöld Péter: the most magical playground in Budapest (Millenáris)

Welcome to the Zöld Péter playground, one of the loveliest playgrounds in Budapest and my daughters' favourite. It's a really special park, inspired by Hungarian folk tales, where kids can play, climb, hide and let their imagination run wild.

What is the Zöld Péter playground?

Zöld Péter is a themed playground based on folk tales, one of the oldest and most special in Budapest. In fact, it was the city's first playground of its kind, and it owes its current look to a major renovation in 2009 that involved more than 20 artists.

The result is a park full of hand-carved wooden sculptures representing the characters from the tale of Zöld Péter (Green Peter), a brave boy who stars in a Hungarian folk story.

The lovely part is that the play areas are linked together following the thread of the story, so you can walk through them as if you were turning the pages of a book. Although, to be honest, my girls were far more interested in playing than in following the plot.

By the way, the park was completely renovated again in 2026, with an eye-catching castle-shaped entrance gate (the «Zöld Péter mese tere»), towers and fairy-tale details, plus brand-new attractions.

The play area

Zöld Péter has loads of things to play on, and many aren't the usual ones you see in an ordinary playground:

A giant slide and several kinds of swings.

A hamster wheel (I found it really funny).

A zip line with a ramp and little nooks to hide in.

Fairy-tale sculptures to climb on and a small castle with towers.

A sandpit, a musical fountain (now with a little animal area) and pretend-play corners like a playhouse-shop.

In short, it's the perfect place to spend a whole morning or afternoon without the kids getting bored for a second.

Tip: the ground is covered in gravel, so bring the little ones in closed shoes, so you avoid pebbles getting into their sandals all the time.

Location and opening hours

Zöld Péter is inside Millenáris Park, in Budapest's District II (on the Buda side), right across from the National Dance Theatre. It's free to enter, unless there's a private event on at the venue.

It opens every day from 6:00 a.m. until dusk. It's easy to reach by tram (lines 4 and 6 stop nearby), and there are toilets at several points around Millenáris.

Millenáris Park, a green oasis

Another thing that makes Zöld Péter special is where it is. Millenáris is a beautiful green space right in the centre, a real oasis with ponds full of fish, seating areas and a wonderfully family-friendly atmosphere. Around it you'll find cafes and places to eat, so you can turn it into a full day out.

Tip: very close by, next to Széllkapu park, is the Norma Grand cafe, which I love for breakfast or brunch before or after playtime (it has a lovely terrace overlooking the park, great for kids). And if the children still have energy, the same park has more play areas, like an adventure playground with climbing structures.

Why we love it

It's one of those parks we always come back to whenever we're in Budapest visiting family. And it's not just because my girls love it: it's also one of those places grown-ups enjoy, for how beautiful and well-kept it all is, and that storybook feel it has.
