About us
Hi! I’m Miriam, and together with Gábor and our two daughters, we are the family behind Medio Hippie.
We’re a Spanish-Hungarian family based in Tenerife since 2016. We’re passionate about family travel, charming stays, local food, and discovering each destination without rushing. We’re not the kind of people who plan every minute of a trip — we prefer leaving room for improvisation and the little surprises that show up along the way.
Here are 10 things about us so you can get to know us a little better:
- We met in Bermuda working on a cruise ship
Our story began in Bermuda while we were both working for a cruise line. I was an International Concierge and Gábor worked as a casino croupier onboard. Different roles, same adventure and somehow, that’s where it all started. - We’re a family of four, and each of us was born in a different place
I was born in Gran Canaria, Gábor in Budapest, our eldest daughter in Ibiza, and our youngest in Tenerife. As you can see, islands feel like home to us. - We lived in different places before settling in Tenerife
Before calling Tenerife home, we lived together in the UK and spent five wonderful years in Ibiza. - I spent my first pregnancy traveling around Thailand for three months
I know it sounds completely crazy, but I promise I’m actually one of the most responsible people you’ll meet.
Seeing how motherhood is lived in different cultures helped me slow down, release unnecessary stress, and understand that there isn’t just one “right” way to do things.
It was an experience that completely changed how I see motherhood and I still have a thousand stories from that trip. - Our eldest daughter was born in Ibiza
We lived five years in Ibiza, and that’s where our first daughter was born. Many people know the island for its nightlife, but for us it will always be where our family began and where some of our most beautiful memories were created. The White Island will always have a special place in our hearts, and yes, it’s also an amazing destination for families. - We chose Tenerife to raise our children
As a true Canarian, I always knew I wanted my daughters to grow up here. Even after all our travels, I still believe it’s hard to find a place as beautiful and welcoming as the Canary Islands. Tenerife gives us nature, safety, quality of life, and a way of living we deeply value. - We believe in slow travel
We like staying long enough in a place to truly feel it. We prefer local markets, conversations with locals, returning to the same café several days in a row, and experiencing daily life instead of rushing through a city in 24 hours - I don’t plan itineraries… but I do research where to eat
I don’t really plan detailed routes or schedules. I’m not the kind of person who organizes every hour of a trip or ticks off endless lists of things to do.
But I do spend time researching where to eat in local restaurants, cozy cafés, food markets… I’m a true foodie. And let’s be honest: a bad lunch can ruin your whole day. - I speak five languages (although not Hungarian… yet)
One of the most useful things travel has given me is the ability to communicate easily in different countries. I speak five languages, which always comes in handy when we’re on the road. That said… after all these years with a Hungarian husband, I still don’t speak Hungarian. I’m working on it (slowly!). - Traveling with kids means embracing imperfection
If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that we are definitely improvisers. And with kids, life (and travel) is never perfectly planned.
I don’t pretend to be a role model or to show a perfect version of family travel. We’ve had our share of “oops” moments: forgotten suitcases, last-minute changes, unexpected sick days… and honestly, it’s all part of it. We buy clothes where we are, we adapt, and we move on.
And yes, when we get sick on trips, it usually hits me first not the kids. Go figure.
At the end of the day, traveling with children isn’t about control, it’s about adapting, laughing at the chaos, and enjoying the ride. For us, travel is simply living life in a different place that isn’t home.
If you’ve enjoyed reading this, stay around and I promise plenty of travel inspiration, good food, beautiful places, and lots of family moments.
