Where to stay in La Palma

When I was looking for somewhere to stay for our holiday in La Palma, I found so many places I liked that choosing just one turned out to be hard. That was one of the reasons we ended up booking two, in two different parts of the island: Casa Morera in Fuencaliente and Apartamentos Chaxiraxi in Breña Baja. Here are our favourite places to stay on the island of La Palma.
Hotels
Hotel Hacienda de Abajo
The Hotel Hacienda de Abajo is a former 17th-century sugar estate and, in our opinion, the most elegant and exclusive hotel on La Palma. It sits in the historic centre of Tazacorte, surrounded by banana plantations and very close to the sea. La Hacienda de Abajo is classified as the first emblematic hotel in the Canaries, a category kept for hotels housed in buildings that form part of the islands' historic heritage. It is adults-only (over-16s).

Teneguía Princess
The Teneguía Princess, surrounded by banana plantations and looking out to sea, is one of the finest hotels on the island. It is in the municipality of Fuencaliente, in the south, close to the famous Salinas de Fuencaliente (the salt pans). It has no fewer than 11 outdoor pools. An ideal place for families.

Apartments
Apartamento Chaxiraxi
The Apartamento Chaxiraxi is in Breña Baja, just 9 minutes from Santa Cruz de La Palma and the port. The flat is completely new. It has a single bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room, plus a small balcony with sea views.

Apartamento Cancajos
The apartamentos Cancajos in Breña Baja have an unbeatable location. Set on a hillside, they look out over Los Cancajos beach. Eight apartments full of character, each with its own private terrace and panoramic views.

Apartamento Atlántico Playa 1
The best thing about the Apartamento Atlántico is undoubtedly its location: a one-minute walk from Puerto Naos beach. This cosy two-bedroom flat has a balcony with sea views. It is 35 km from the airport.

Casas rurales
Casa Morera
Casa Morera dates from the 18th century and is in Los Quemados, in Fuencaliente, in the south of the island. It is a very special house: it was Fuencaliente's first town hall. It has incredible views of the sea and of the San Antonio and Teneguía volcanoes. An ideal spot for anyone after peace and quiet.

Villas Morera
Villas Morera is in Breña Baja, about 15 minutes from the airport and from Santa Cruz de La Palma. It's three separate casas rurales (Teresa, David and Antonio) sharing a solar-heated pool that's open all year. You can book a single house or the whole complex, so it works as well for a couple as for a big group. We stayed in Casa Antonio, the largest of the three, on a later trip.

Villa Cruz
Villa Cruz is in Breña Baja, just 10 minutes from the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma. This charming casa rural sits in a setting made for resting and relaxing. It has two bedrooms, a barbecue, a terrace, parking and sea views.

Casa La Breña
Casa La Breña sits in the middle of an organic farm. Los Cancajos beach is 800 m away on foot and Santa Cruz de La Palma is 4 km. This three-bedroom house has an outdoor pool, a garden and a terrace.
