Guachinche El Miradero in Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife

Not long ago we discovered a guachinche full of charm: the Guachinche El Miradero. We were near Icod de los Vinos and wanted to try a new guachinche. We often fall into the trap of always going back to the same places, but there are so many guachinches on this island that the best thing we can do is keep exploring. We searched on TripAdvisor for a guachinche in the area with the three Bs — good, nice and cheap (bueno, bonito, barato) — and if possible, with a kids’ area. That’s how we discovered Guachinche El Miradero. In the photos on TripAdvisor it didn’t look like anything special, but when we got there we were captivated by the views and the colours of the place. Will you join us to discover the Guachinche El Miradero?

If you’ve never been to one, a guachinche is a simple, cheap Canarian eatery serving the local wine and home cooking. El Miradero also boasts gorgeous views of the Teide — hence the name.

It sits high above Icod de los Vinos and the way up is anything but easy. Steep, narrow streets with no signs whatsoever. If it hadn’t been for Google Maps, we’d never have found it. When you arrive there’s a parking area, but you can’t see the guachinche from there — you have to follow the little path through the vineyards.

The atmosphere

There’s a large terrace surrounded by vineyards, with a couple of tables. As it was a bit cold — despite the blue sky you can see in the photos — we decided to sit inside.

Inside

We loved the inside of El Miradero. Rustic, simple decor with lots of nice touches.

What to eat

The menu is fairly small. Sorry — we forgot to take a photo of it. If I remember rightly they had: padrón peppers, cheese with quince paste, croquettes, pork ribs, huevos estampida, garbanzada (chickpea stew), a mixed grill, and so on.

To start we ordered croquettes, which were very good, though €5 for 6 croquettes at a guachinche felt a bit steep. As a main, a mixed grill to share — delicious; it’s priced by the kilo, €10/kg. We also ordered some chips and three 7 Ups to drink.

The house wine is their own fruity white, the Generación 74, which almost everyone was ordering. And although it’s a guachinche, they also serve coffee.

We paid a bill of: €21.50

The service

When we arrived there weren’t many tables taken, but little by little it filled up. There were only two waiters and, although they were friendly, we have to say the service was quite slow. It felt like they couldn’t keep up, so they didn’t have time to interact with the customers either.

With kids

This is probably what we liked most. The Guachinche El Miradero has a big garden area where the kids can run around freely, always in their parents’ sight. In the garden there are also some swings and a very friendly little dog.

Our verdict

We loved El Miradero, above all for its views of the Teide and the kids’ area, which let us eat in peace while the girls played. The food — a good Canarian grill — was tasty, though the croquettes felt a bit pricey for a guachinche and the service got a little slow once it filled up. Even so, we recommend it: it’s a guachinche full of charm and very family-friendly.

And if you’re in the area, don’t miss more things to do with kids in Icod de los Vinos.
