10 Things to do with kids in Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife

In Tenerife, there are endless activities to do with children and I tell you that I have been living here for some years. But today I want to focus on a particular town, Icod de Los Vinos, famous for its ancient drago tree, but has many other leisure options for the little ones. I tell you in this post 10 Things to do with kids in Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife.

1. Visiting the Drago Butterfly Farm

The Mariposario del Drago in Icod de los Vinos is a magical place and one of my favorite things to do with children in Tenerife. More than 800 butterflies from all over the world fly free in a kind of small greenhouse. Just as beautiful as the butterflies are the plants inside, which play a very important role in the life of these animals, as they are their food and their home. There is also a very didactic area with informative panels and information about butterflies.

Opening hours of the Mariposario del Drago: Open every day from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:30. Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 19:00.

2. Entering the Wind Cave

The Cueva del Viento is the largest volcanic tube in Europe and considered the sixth largest in the world. The visit is on foot and lasts approximately 3 hours, starting at the visitor’s center. Inside the cave is approximately 45 minutes and 250 m. of the cave are visited.

Children under 5 years old are not allowed to participate. If you are claustrophobic, I do not recommend this activity. The tour is done in groups of 6 people and reservations are required.

3. Artlandya, Dolls Museum

ARTlandya, is a museum of contemporary art of dolls and teddy bears. The collection has more than 300 dolls, from different international artists. The owners, Georg and Ingrid Taupe founded ARTlandaya in March 2012 in Tenerife. It has a beautiful tropical garden, a cafeteria and a store where you can buy a teddy bear or doll as a souvenir of your visit. Doll Museum. ARTlandya .

4. Discovering the Millennium Dragon Tree

The Millenary Dragon Tree (Dracaena Draco Canariensis), is the most popular attraction in Icod de Los Vinos. But did you know that although it is called Drago Milenario, it is believed to be only 800 years old?

It is considered the oldest in the Canary archipelago. It has a height of more than 16 meters, the perimeter of its base is 20 meters and has an approximate weight of 150 tons, of which 80 tons correspond only to the top.

You can enjoy the view of the Drago and take the typical photo from the Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres or you can see it from below, visiting the Drago Park. 5. Swimming at San Marcos Beach

Playa San Marcos is located in the coastal town of San Marcos in Icod de Los Vinos. It is a small beach of black sand, like most beaches in the north of Tenerife and crystal clear waters. In the area there are several restaurants and terraces, where to eat or have a drink.

It also has showers and a lifeguard post. It is a beach very frequented by the locals.

6. Banana House

To talk about the Canary Islands is inevitably also to talk about their bananas. And the banana is an important source of economic income for the islands. In the Casa del Plátano de Icod de los Vinos, you will learn the history and importance of this product for the Canary Islands, through a tour of the farm.

They also have a small store where you can buy all kinds of products made with bananas and even buy a small banana tree, as we did during our visit.

7. Playing in the Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres Square Park.

If you travel with children you will already know that every now and then you have to stop at a park where they can play and spend a little of the energy they have. In the Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres there is a fabulous inclusive park, where the kids can play while their parents have a snack at the kiosk, which is located right in front of the park.

The park is almost next to the ancient dragon tree, before walking past the Church of San Marcos and its beautiful gardens.

8. Have a drink at La Casa del Drago

I had to include a stop in this beautiful cafe, but the truth is that I didn’t know how to disguise it as an activity for children, because I really recommend this for mommies and daddies hahaha. The Café del Drago is a beautiful place, where I like to go often. But it is true, it is one of those places where you want your kids not to run, not to scream … come on, not to be kids! hahahaha

I love to go to have a wine under the eyes of the dragon tree, because this Café is in the typical patio of a Canarian house. They have a great variety of desserts and you can also have a tapa of Canarian cheeses, with a local wine. A perfect starter, for what I am going to propose you next.

9. Eating at the Guachinche el Miradero

You know that in this blog there is always a little space for gastronomy. If you are in Icod de Los Vinos and you go with children, the guachinche that I definitely recommend is El Miradero. You have to drive up some hills before you get there, but believe me it will be worth it. They have a small but very tasty menu and a delicious fruity white wine. But if I recommend the guachinche El Miradero so much to go with children, it is because of its large outdoor space where they can play and run around safely. 10. Visiting a bee hive

Visiting La Abejera La Ecoalpispa, is one of the activities we have enjoyed the most in Tenerife. And it seems to me an ideal place to visit with the family and make the little ones know more in depth the world of bees.

At Ecoalpista you can book the visit to the bee hive and the visit to the beehive and the beehives.

Best of all, you can dress up in a beekeeper’s costume and see up close how these little insects work to produce honey.
