5 Restaurants where to eat in Vienna (that we have tried)

Vienna is known for its cultural history, impressive architecture and classical music. But beyond its monuments and palaces, this European city is also a foodie paradise. From historic cafes to elegant restaurants, Vienna offers a wide variety of places to enjoy gastronomy.

In this post, I present you 5 restaurants where to eat in Vienna, which we have already tried and loved.

Santos Mexican Grill & Bar

If you are looking for a Mexican restaurant in Vienna, the best without a doubt is Santos Mexican Grill & Bar. They have two restaurants in town, Santos Wieden in the 1040 district and Santos Neubau in the 1070 district. We went to Santos Neubau and loved it. The restaurant has an impressive terrace that takes two corners. The interior of the place is beautiful, quite spacious and dimly lit. We decided to sit on the terrace because it was so hot in the middle of August.

Despite the size of the place and the terrace, it was completely full. There were many people eating, but also several groups of friends having a drink and Santos Mexican Grill has an incredible cocktail menu and happy hour during the week from 16:00 to 20:00 and from 23:00 to 24:00.

Everything we ordered was exquisite, but I definitely recommend you try the chicken fajitas. The portions of the dishes are abundant, keep this in mind if you go with children.

2. Feinkosterei Neuer Markt

Feinkosterei Neuer Markt is an elegant restaurant located in a 16th century building, centrally located and quite inexpensive for Vienna. We ate here after taking the guided tour of the Spanish Riding School (Spanische Hofreitschule), as the restaurant is only a 5-minute walk from the Hofburg.

The restaurant has two floors and a nice terrace. I recommend eating on the second floor, you will be very surprised. They have two spacious, bright and very elegantly decorated rooms. By the way, I loved the bathroom deco :P

Everything we ate was delicious, but I advise you to order the most typical of Vienna, the Schnitzel and for dessert the homemade Milchrahmstrudel with hot vanilla cream. The portions are a bit small, but the food is delicious. If you go with children the schnitzel dish is a good choice.
At Feinkosterei Neuer Markt they have the menu translated into Spanish, something uncommon in Vienna and this is thanks to Scarlett, a waitress from Nicaragua who works there and who was super nice to us, as was Tribor, another of the waiters who served us.

By the way, from Monday to Friday from 11:30 to 14:30 they have a menu of the day for 14,90 €.

3. Sajado Red

The most original restaurant we visited in Vienna was undoubtedly Sajado Reed, the first robatagrill restaurant in Vienna. The Josper robatagrill is an open charcoal grill, for cooking in the Robatayaki style, an ancient culinary technique from Japanese culture, which consists of grilling in front of the diners. The best thing about this grill is that you can mix meats, fish and vegetables without mixing aromas.

Sajado Red is an a la carte buffet and you can eat as much as you want. They give you a tablet where you see all the dishes they offer and you order what you want to eat. When you finish your order, the application tells you the approximate waiting time. As you can see in the photo below, the food comes in small portions on different trays. Then you have to place the skewers on the hot coals and cook them. You can imagine how much fun it was for the girls to prepare their own food.

4. Edison

Before catching the train from Vienna to Budapest, we decided to say goodbye to the city by enjoying an amazing brunch and the place we chose was a great choice.

Edison is a restaurant with European cuisine, located in the center of Vienna with a very pleasant atmosphere. They offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch on Sundays. The brunch is buffet style, with a wide variety of hot and cold dishes. I was pleased to see that there was a wide variety of vegan dishes and organic products. The presentation and quality of the dishes, as well as the attention of the staff and the cleanliness of the place, were exceptional. Edison serves brunch only on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00 and costs 29 € per person(children are free). The brunch includes unlimited cava and orange juice, but coffee is not included.

A funny anecdote we experienced was that one of the waiters at Edison spoke Spanish. After talking to him for a while, we found out that his mother lives in Tenerife and that he often travels to the island. :)

You know, if you are looking for a place to have brunch in Vienna or enjoy a nice meal, Edison is a good choice for lunch in Vienna.

5. TOP 02. Pâtisserie Glacerie

TOP 02. Pâtisserie Glacerie It’s not a restaurant, but it’s so tasty that it had to be on this list. It is a small French pastry shop in the center of Vienna. They have a great variety of eclairs, but they also have ice cream and other French desserts like macaroons and coffee. Although the place is small, it has two floors and a very nice outdoor terrace. The staff is super friendly and attentive 😊 And as they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, look at this reel where you can see what we ordered.

Eating in Vienna is a real pleasure. There is a wide variety of restaurants and cafes, but if there is something in common with these 5 places that I recommend where to eat in Vienna, is that they are not very touristy and very popular among the Viennese.
